To Be Damned

A project by Sofía Farrés

What is To Be Damned?

To Be Damned is an honors thesis project by Emerson College student Sofía Farrés. There are two components to the project: a 60-page research paper and a 7-part web series.

The paper, titled To Be Damned: The Plight of a Young Catholic Woman, will explore the ways in which growing up in the Catholic Church and being taught to look up to women who are known solely for how much they suffered affects the mental health of women throughout different stages of their lives.

The To Be Damned web series, which is currently in production and set to begin releasing in December of 2024, was written and is being directed by Sofía. It follows the story of a girl named Aggie as she and her friends attend college in the fictional most Catholic town in the country, Bethlehem, RI. Almost every character in the show is loosely based on a different saint, and it serves as a modern retelling of their stories.

The goal of this project is to make people think: What are the implications of being taught that our value to God and to others is dependent on how much we have suffered throughout our lives?

Both the paper and the series will be available to read and stream on this website in late 2024-early 2025.

Support the Project

Creating a show such as this one with a team composed of entirely student filmmakers is a massive feat, so we humbly ask for any support you are willing and able to give. Whether it be donating to our GoFundMe or sharing the project on social media, with family, and with friends... anything helps! Donations will be going directly to covering expenses for the series including, but not limited to: equipment rentals, craft services, production design, costuming, location expenses, and transportation.
